Are charities a good thing, or do they fill the gaps that government and society should provide?

Do you give to charity regularly, support any particular charity, fund raise or ignore the whole industry?

I used to have DD's for..Woodland trust (animal rescue)..Candis (cancer reserch) and another one I cant remember now..But due to a finacial shuffle I had to cancel. (ie; skintitis)..I will reinstate at some point, but i'm only going to support these ones..If theres a local appeal like one we had resently for the toy libary, then I will donate..I prefer to help my community.

I give to Cancer research and The Blind Institute, because I have family members who suffer from both.

I support NSPCC, RSPCA, SCOPE, MARIE CURIE CANCER CARE. My husband supports GOSH.
I think charities are necessary and do good work.

I do fund raising for Marie Curie and have a monthly dd payment to the Red Cross and Oxfam. Also donate to DEC as often as I can. I used to have more, but had to cancel several in harder times.
